    Samir Chanda, a graduate in fine arts has been associated with the film making and advertising industry for over 24 years now. Starting on the other side of the fence as a painter and a theatre enthusiast, he migrated to the world of film making quiet by accident, under the able leadership and quidance of renowned production designer Mr. Nitish Roy, he was given an insight into the exciting and creative world of film making for about 8 years. Then he started sailing on his own as a Production Designer and Art Director. He started his career as Art Director with Subhash Ghai (Ram Lakhan - 1989).

    Very soon he was accepted by the great masters of Indian cinema like Mrinal Sen, Govind Nihalani, M.T. Vasdevan Nair, Rajkumar Santoshi, Ram Gopal Verma, Kalpana Lazmi, Dev Bengal, Ketan Mehta, Santosh Sivan, Goutam Ghose, Buddadeb Dasgupta and young film makers like Mr. Samir Karnik, Mr. Rakesh Mehra and Mr. Samir Karnik and Mr. Rakesh Mehra. For Mani Ratnam (Dil Se, Guru, Raavan), Shyam Benegal (Zubeidaa, Bose, Welcome to Sajjanpur) and Vishal Bhardwaj (Omkara, Kaminey, 7 Khoon Maaf), he has been a constant collaborator. He has worked on blockbusters like Rang De Basanti, Ghajini and Krrish.

    His Bengali movies filmography includes Goutam Ghose’s Moner Manush and Buddhadeb Dasgupta’s Kaalpurush. Among the big films awaiting release where he has worked are Pankaj Kapur’s Mausam and the under-production Joker by Shirish Kunder.

    Samir Chanda also played a key role in developing the art direction course at the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. He also directed a Bengali movie, 'Ek Nadir Galpo' (Tale of a river) in 2008.

    He has earned three prestigious National Awards, Kerela State Award and several other awards. He passed away in Mumbai on Aug 18, 2011, following a heart attack.
