Samit Bhanja was born on 2nd January, 1944 in Jamshedpur. His parents Pritimoy Bhanja and Shila Bhanja used to call him by the name Bubu.He completed his Matriculation from Jamshedpur after which he came to Kolkata for pursuing higher studies.He got admission in St.Pauls’ College in kolkata. For sometime he also went to Jhargram for studying in Polytechnic School.
He got his first break in Balai Sen’s film “Surer Agun” .He played the role of a tabla player in this movie since he was a good singer. This movie was released in 1965.His role in the character of ‘Choney’ in Tapan Sinha’s Apan Jan’ was remarkable and was highly appreciated.He had acted in several movies and also in theatre and yatras.He was associated with Rupkar group Theatre. His screen presence, charming personality made him a household name.He was a committed and workaholic actor who worked in the song sequence of the movie “Fuleshwari” inspite of being aware of the poor health condition of his father.One of his memorable performance which had great relevance to his real life was his work in Gautam Ghose’s Abar Aranye(2003)where he played the role of a terminally ill sportsmen.At that time. In real life the actor was suffering from cancer. He portrayed his acting skills brilliantly which will remembered by all movie lovers forever. He passed away in July, 2003.
