Born to one of Bollywood’s most celebrated star couples, Nargis Dutt and Sunit Dutt, Sanjay Dutts life so far has been no less that roller coasters ride with many ups and downs. Sanjay was born on 29th July 1959 and went to the Lawrence school Sanawar. Unable to cope up with the pressures of being a star son, he took to drugs while he was still in high school. His drug problems worsened with his mothers deteriorating health, who was diagnosed with cancer. Nargis died a few weeks before Sanjay’s debut film, Rocky was to be released. As Sanjay took to more drugs, his father sent him to a rehabilitation centre in Texas. A sober Sanjay returned to India and to films and married Richa Sharma in 1987. The two have a daughter, Trishala but tragedy struck again and Richa was diagnosed with cancer barely 2 months after Trishala’s birth. The couple separated and Richa went to the States to spend time with her parents.
Sanjay’s first film appearance was in Reshma aur Shera, his father’s film, where he made a small appearance as a qawwali singer. His first big break as hero was Rocky (1981). Sanjay acted in some successful films in the 80’s, noteworthy among them being Vidhaata (1982), Naam (1986) and Hathyar (1989). The early 90s saw some hit films like Sadak and Saajan (both in 1991). Then came his breakthrough movie Khalnayak (1993), which became a huge hit. With the success of Khalnayak also came the shame of Sanjays arrest in connection with the 1993 Mumbai blasts. Dutt was booked undar TADA for illegal possession of arms and had to spend 18 months in jail. Dutt started consolidating his career after his release from jail and went on to do some good films like Vaastav (1999) and Mission Kashmir (2000). Then came the stupendous success of Munnabhai MBBS (2003) which vaulted Dutt into the big league. Dutt doubled his fan following after the film and Munnabhai became a sort of cult cinema. The sequel Lage Raho Munnabhai did equally well and Sanjay was at the peak of his career. With this success came another jolt in the form of a TADA court verdict which found Dutt guilty under the Arms Act for possessing an illegal weapon and on 31st July 2007 he was sentenced to 6 years rigorous imprisonment. After many appeals, he was granted bail in Novemner 2007. Sanjays personal and professional life it seems have always been conflicting with each other. Whenever the actor has received professional success, it has been followed by some personal loss. His big hit Khalnayak was followed by his first arrest and just when people were putting the past behind them post his tremendous success in the Munnabhai series, he was put behind bars again.
Sanjay’s forthcoming films are Anthony Kaun Tha, Mohabbat Ho Gaye Tumse, Alibaug, Jaan Ki Baazi, Wajahat The King, Munna Bhai Chale America and Baseera. In January 2008, an advertisement in Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamna, which congratulated Sena chief Bal Thackeray on his 82nd birthday, mentioned the names of those greeting Thackeray as 'Sanjay Dutt and Manyata Dutt' instead of her surname, Shaikh Dilnawaz. Sanjay had always denied his marriage to Manyata earlier, and this was the first time he has announced the marriage
