Soumo is the only son of a Jaminder and Saptami is the only daughter of the village clergyman. They love each other from their chilhood. Soumo went to Kolkata for his studies and after returning back to his village he met his childhood love. Soumo's father was not in favour of their relation and his father was trying to marry him with his friends daughter in Kolkata. As a result there was a fight between Soumo and his father and Soumo decided to marry Saptami. After the wedding, Soumo returned to Kolkata for his studies, giving the responsibility of Saptami to his friend Abhi. Abhi is an enemy of the Jaminder due to his honesty. Nobody in the village is aware of the marraiage except the families of the bride and grroom. Abhi takes the responsibility of Saptami for her protection. All connection between Soumo and Saptami are broken, their letters are ceased by the Jamindar. In the meantime Saptami becomes pregnent. People blame her and force her to leave the village. Saptami goes for Kolkata with Abhi to find Soumo. On the other hand, Soumo comes to his village and misunderstands the situation. Abhi and Saptami take a shelter in a slum. Soumo falls in love with Kuntala and goes abroad for higher studies. Saptami gives birth to a child, Sagar. She becomes mentally disbalanced and is sent to mental hospital. The son of Soumo, Sagar is looked after by Abhi and his wife. Soumo now, a doctor returns to Kolkatta, he meets with his wife Saptami in a mentally disturbed condition. Saptami is cured by Soumo and other doctors. One day Soumo meets with an accident. A child is knocked down. Finally he comes to know that the child is his son. In the end the zamindar realises his mistake and accepts Saptami as his daughter in law.
