Sankar, a school drop out, stays in a village with his mother. He is constantly helping others in many ways, but does nothing to make his own ends meet. His mother also wants to get married to a uneducated girl as it will be easier for her to get along with such a girl rather than an educated girl.Sankar fixes his own marriage with Indrani, an educated girl who has money , but Dasuda, the ‘Ghatak’ who fixes his marriage with Indrani mispresents facts. As a result, things are not okay from the day of marriage and Indrani and her mother-in-law don’t get along together. A particular event occurs on the reception which is why Sankar is even arrested and even released later, but he goes home to find that his mother has committed suicide. He later goes away to a village in search of work and arrives at the very village where he had grown up. He meets two wealthy zamindars who take to him. They are big rivals, but Sankar plays one against another and tries to improve things in the village by getting them to build roads, hospitals with their money. He even starts a school for girls which Indrani arrives in the village. It seems that their love for each other has not yet diminished; rather it has increased by leaps and bounds. Though initially no one knows about their relationship and yet Rakho Hari, one of the zamindars even wants to get his daughter married to him, yet circumstances prevail which lets everyone know about the relationship between Sankar and Indrani. On the day of the inauguration of the hospital, Sankar is severely injured when he is shot and that is when the truth comes tumbling out at the hospital.
