Shatabdir Galpo is a touching story of the decadence of our social values that is reflected in the heartlessness of the privileged class & results in the insurmountable hardships of the underprivileged one who lack the wealth,knowledge or power & have to sell their dignity to earn a decent living. Leaving his family behind in utter distress, a janitor at a government office,commits suicide. But his close friend Dashu tries every possible means to get his late friends dues cleared after the widow is thrown out from her father's house. Dashu finds her a room on rent. According to the head clerk's demand the widow is brought to the office even in the critical stage of pregnancy & she gives birth to her child there. Years move on but the obsequious Dashu trapped in the red tapism,manages to do nothing meaningful. In utter despair,the hapless guy reacts violently only to get arrested & loses his mantal balance due to the inhuman atrocities of the police. Unaware of this Labanya starts looking for him but cannot find him. She takes the work of a house maid under duress & one day identifies Dashu who has lost his mind completly on a streetside in Kolktta. But he flees away from her before she can trace him. Labanya resumes going to office for her case & the devious headclerk assures her and notes her address & comes to her hut only to exploit her sexually. He tells her that he was behind Dashu's arrest and the servile lady losses her patience when her little girl is raped by the attendents of the office. She curses them all only to get thrown out.Then she turns into a prostitute to feed her chilldren. One day when he happily informs her that finally a huge amount of whealth awaits her she tears up the cheque & yeilds herself to crying for the losses she has suffered. They are indelible & she cannot reach out to these people to bridge the distance. .
