    Satyajit Ray the Godfather of Indian Cinema, was born on 2nd May, 1921 in Kolkata. He was the son of Sukumar Ray, who was a writer and a illustrator of classic children's literature. His 'Abol Tabol' is one of the famous composition for the children.

    Ray's nickname was 'Manik'. The name by which Ray's family, friends and co-workers use to know him. Ray started his schooling at the age of eight and half. He studied at 'Ballygunge Government School' which was considered to be one of best Bengali medium institutions. Ray had been taught mainly by his mother, Suprabha Devi, who was also a good teacher in both English and Bengali. Finally Ray graduated from Presidency College in the year 1939 and the left the crowded city in the mid 40s' to study Fine Arts at Shantiniketan. Professionally he was a successful film director, the 'Giant' of Indian Cinema. In the year 1955 he made his first debut film making, "Pather Panchali”, in association with West Bengal Government, which was a milestone event in Indian Cinema. He was mentioned by various awards in India as well as in foreign countries too, He had directed about 35 films, few documentary and two telefilms. He also wrote books on detective thriller science fiction etc for the young generation.

    He was awarded by De Litt 'Golden Lion' of St Mark from Bishwa Bharati. He was awarded with 'Deshikottam' and then the 'Dada Saheb Phalke' award in 1984. During Berlin Film Festival he was nominated as the best director among three apart from Ingman Bargaman and Charlie Chaplin. Another new feather was added in his cap when he bagged 'Legion of Honour', which is to be known as one of the most prestigious awards in France. On 23rd April, 1992, Satyajit Ray left us for ever.
