Saawan Kumar has given Indian Cinema a great number of successful films and an even greater number of the enduringly Best-Loved films relating to "Southen" , "Love" themes
In 1956 he left his captivating home town of Jaipur and came to Bombay to become an actor. After a decade of undiluted struggle, in 1965 an idea struck him and his first film “NAUNIHAL” (meaning a Promising Child) became an instant children’s classic. In 72 he directed "Gomti ke Kinare" with his mentor Meena Kumari which was a critically acclaimed film after that "Hawas" and "Ab kya hoga" "Saajan bina suhagan", "saajan ki saheli" were average hits and had different subjects.
But the turning point came with "Souten" which was a boxoffice hit with Rajesh Khanna's hit after his troubled marriage and good songs. The combination of his personal vision of intimacy and the epic requirements of the modern commercial block buster in 1986, he created PYAR KI JEET (translating to A Victory of Love) dealing with the issues of emotional commitment and loss. His recognition was inevitable as he was awarded the Best Director in 1988 at the 27th International Film Festival at Avelino, Italy
After that came "Sanam Bewaffa" which was also a great musical hit . But his 93 film "khalnaika" was very criticised for using the bold theme and it was rejected at the box office. After that all his films sank at the box office which were "Sanam Harjai", "Mother", "Salma pe dil aa gaya""Chand ka tukda" and the last being "saawan the love season".
But his films music were very good. Most of his filmsmusic was given by his wife Usha Khanna whom he divorced later. Many of his works were ahead of time for the Indian audience. He was elected as the President of Indian Motion Picture Producers Association (IMPPA) in the year 2003.
