After a brillant academic career in Patna, Shyamalendu Chalterjee shifts to Kolkata with his wife Dolan to join a British Company . Soon promoted to Sales Manager, Shyamlendu works towards his highest goal— to be Director of his company, Hindustan Peter Ltd. Meanwhile, Dolan's younger sister, Sudarshana, comes for a holiday to Kolkata. As a teenager in Patna, Sudarshana had admired and liked the talented Shyamalendu even before he had married her sister. During her visit to Kolkata this admiration develops into something more. Chatterjee responds for Sudarshana has come as a welcome break in his routine. At this point, Chatterjee becomes occupied with a major crisis at the office. A consignment of ceiling fans meant for export are rejected on final inspection. A delay in shipment means a heavy loss in both money and prestige. With the help of the personnel officer, Chatterjee manoeuvres to create a strike in the factory. The lockout that follows justifies the delay in shipment. For averting this crisis, Chatterjee is inducted into the Board of Directors and his happiness is shared by all except a disillusioned Sudarshana. She has seen and dislikes the rat race.
