Shagird rating: 5 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 13 May 2011)

Nana Patekar is one such actor who has lots of talent, but most of the times had been stuck in a certain style or image. He first started his career with small and experimental roles, followed by negative characters, leading to loud dialogbaazi, middle age guy and recently playing the cool smart cop after getting great reviews in ‘Ab Tak Chappan’. On other side a decade back a young director {Tigmanshu Dhulia} made his name on television followed by a political drama ‘Haasil’. He did few more films but the spark he had started to slow down and after a long span of non release; he comes back with Nana Patekar and others in his latest film ‘Shagird’. So let’s find out together these talented people can deliver something new or might succumb to the past glory.

“Shagird” is story of a top Crime Branch officer Hanumant Singh (Nana Patekar) who is a daredevil cop, has good contacts with top level politicians and bureaucrats, loved old Hindi films songs and love to earn money by all means. He and his team gets a new recruit Mohit (Mohit Ahlawat) who prefers to work on his ethics. A top level criminal Bunty Bhaiya (Anurag Kashyap) is caught and thus his boss politician Rajmani Singh (Zakir Hussain) sense trouble. Rajmani uses Hanumant Singh to take care of his problems and out here to decide to take his help. On other side Hanumant Singh’s family is attacked and Mohit’s Friend cum News reporter Varsha (Rimi Sen) is kidnapped. What happens next is all the film about.

Story has shades from Ab Tak Chappan, A Wednesday and few more films. You sense a déjà vu while watching this film. Even at times the background music too matches with Ab Tak Chappan’s Background score. Still Some scenes like Nana Patekar’s Hindi Songs Trivia sharing habit, He capturing the criminals using camera, Nana Testing Mohit and making him sing songs, Nana talking as Baba giving gyaan, Nana Scene with Ali, Nana –Zakir scene, Nana –Raima Talks, Nana –Mohit talks at nana’s house and Zakir-Anuraag arguments makes the film interesting. On the flip side the whole Mohit side track slows down the film, the screenplay too keeps wandering post interval, Killing of Murli Sharma not explained, not convincing finale and freshness in the script. Camera work is fine but could have been better. Same goes with editing as post interval the movie needed to be sharper.

Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Haasil promised us that there is a powerful director on his way, but all he gave us after that was disappointment. Now he got an Ace actor like Nana Patekar and he could had made some wonders. Sadly he ended up making a copy of Ab Tak Chappan or we can say a sequel to it but with some more twist and turns from few more movies.

Nana Patekar tried his level best not to repeat the Ab Tak Chappan style of acting and it shows. But thanks to the script we do feel the repetitive performance at times. Still it’s due to him the movie keeps you interested. As he is gone from the screen, you start feeling uncomfortable. Loved his style of giving trivia’s for old hind songs from movies like Anadi, Aan, House No 44, Tere Ghar Ke Saamne, Pyaasa, Sharda, Saawan Ki Ghata, C.I.D and more. Mohit is still as always, he had a good role and could have done wonders. Anuraag Kashyap was fine and so was Zakir Hussain. Rimi, Murli Sharma, Mushtaq Khan, Kishori and others were ok.

So meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ is film mein kitna hai Dum ?
Dum hai, but only if you like Nana Patekar and Ab Tak Chappan. But if you don’t, then this movie is not your cup of tea. It is gripping and interesting at most of the time, thus you won’t feel bore or disinterested in it. And after liking a film like Ab Tak Chappan you might find this a cheap copy of it or maybe a Sequel to it.
