Also known as King Khan, Shahrukh is the undisputed Super Star of Bollywood. Born on November 2, 1965, in Gurgaon to Taj Mohammad Khan and Lateef Fatima, SRK (as he is more popularly known) moved to Mumbai in 1991 after his parents passed away and got married to Gauri Khan in the same year.
He made his acting debut in 1988 in a television series, ‘Fauji’, playing the role of Commando Abhimanyu Rai. He appeared in several other television serials, like ‘Circus’ (1989, directed by Aziz Mirza), which depicted the life of circus performers. SRK made his acting debut in Bollywood in 1992, in the Raj Kanwar directed film ‘Deewana’. The film was a huge box office success and his performance earned him the Filmfare award for Best Male Debut. During his acting career spanning more than 25 years now, he has given several blockbusters like Baazigar, Darr, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (this one ran into its 12th year in a Mumbai theatre last year), Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na, Dil To Pagal Hai, Pardes, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Veer Zara, Swades, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, and more recently Chak De India and Om Shanti Om. In 2000, SRK started his own production house ‘Dreamz Unlimited’ with Juhi Chawla and both starred in the first movie of their production house ‘Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani’. His other movies under the same banner were Asoka and Chalte Chalte. In 2004, he set up another production company called Red Chillies Entertainment and produced and starred in Main Hoon Na. In 2005 he produced and starred in the fantasy film Paheli, which was India's official entry to the Oscars for a nomination for Best Foreign Film. The latest film Om Shanti Om, which he produced as well as starred him, was one of the biggest hits of 2007. He came back to the silver screen once again in 2007, when he took over from Amitabh Bachhan as the host of the popular television game show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’. He along with Karan Johar gave a series of Bollywood blockbusters starting from Kuch kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Kal Ho Na Ho and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. He tasted similar success with Farha Khan in two of her directorial ventures Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti Om. His performances in Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na, Dil Se, Mohabbatein, Hey Ram, Asoka, Devdas, Paheli, Swades and Chak De India who him critical acclaim. Few major banner films which were average grossers in the boxoffice were Asoka, Paheli, Dil Se and Baadshah. On the other hand, films like Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995) and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), were some of Bollywood's biggest hits, while films like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), Veer Zaara (2004) and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (2006) and more recently Chak De India and Om Shanti Om (2007) are the biggest Bollywood hits in the overseas market.
The movie slated to be released in 2008 is Mr. and Mrs. Khanna starring Salman Khan and Kareena Kapur is rumoured to have SRK. Currently, he is shooting for My Name is Khan with Karan Johar, Billoo Barber with Priyadarshan and Rab ne Bana Di Jodi with Aditya Chopra. In 2004, he was selected as the top 20 Asian Heroes by Time magazine in their third annual special issue. In 2005 he appeared on the cover of the Asian edition of the National Geographic magazine dated February 2005. His life-size wax statue is available in Madame Tussauds wax museum, London, installed in April 2007. He was also chosen for the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of the Arts and Literature) award of the French government for his “exceptional career.
