  • Bengali 'Singam' expected to be a hit

Shatru rating: 0 out of 10(Aditya Chakrabarty wrote on 03 Jun 2011)

Jeet once again reterns with Shatru, his latest action flick which is a complete rip off from the hit Tamil version 'Singam' which is also being remade in Hindi starring Ajay Devgan. It is basically about the rivalry between Dibakar Singha,a very honest no nonsense cop who tries to bring evil at his feet wherever he runs into it.The entire village loves him, respects him and will give their lives for him.Enter Arjun Sarkar(played by Supriyo Dutta), a much hated kidnapper and an extortionist who terrorizes the villagers and has even cops on his payrole. He is abig time kidnapper in the city though everyone thinks he only deals in real estate.Enter Dibakar, once he comes to know of the real Arjun, there is no stopping him and he goes after him and even starts killing Arjun’s men one by one, including his younger brother.Side by side he even falls in love with Puja,a young girl who comes to the village to visit her grandfather and even gets to romance her in exotic locations.Arjun also starts killing or hurting people close to Dibakar once Dibakar bumps off his brother. What starts from then on is a battle between these two, a game of upsmanship in only onew can come out as the winner.Arjun even kidnaps the daughter of the Assam Home Minister and takes her to Jharkand where Dibakar, hot on his trail with his men also reaches and after a while when Dibakar is able to rescue the daughter , it is left to just these two to settle scores between themselves and naturally Dibakar comes out as the winner.

Jeet’s winning streak has started since last year when he made a grand comeback and reinvented himself with ‘Wanted’, again an Eskay Movies Venture and it continues with this film.He is excellent as Dibakar. He is menacing, charged, violet and brings a much required dimension, a very essential point for the character which makes the character a larger than life one, but most of his films starting with 'Wanted' and specially the ones produced by Eskay Movies feature Jeet in larger than life roles to which he has doen justice so far and this one‘s no exception. The character and the plot has traces of similarity with Dabangg including his moustache, but the film is a rip off of ‘Singam’, the hit Tamil film starring Surya. While this is essentially Jeet’s film and the heroines don’t have much to do in his latest films, newcomer Nusrat does show promise and does what is expected of her .She didn’t need to act much , but has supported and complimented Jeet well playing the role of Puja. The rest of the cast is good but Kharaj as Bhajan and Supriyo Dutt as Arjun are excellent. The action sequences are the USP of the film though with all it’s slow motion as well as fast motion movements, it might fall short on account of logic. The editing is up to the standard thanks to Rabi Ranjan Maitra. The film has been shot in different places in Kolkata & places in Bolepur, Chennai,Tuticorin( 25 km from Srilanka ) & other places in and around Kolkata and the songs have been shot abroad in various places in Turkey such as Istanbul, Antalya, Pamukkalle, Cappodocia. In fact Turkey features for the first time in a Bengali film. The songs are okay, though none of them are great or have a high recall value. What works for the songs are the soulful tunes by Indradeep Dasgupta and the exotic locations which create a special feel for them.

The packaging has been good and Jeet should win the battle between him and the other superstar of Tollywood Dev whose film Paglu is also releasing on the same day.
