Shekhar Chattopadhay was born on 5th May, 1924 in Dharmadoho, Nadia. In1941, he completed Matriculation from Muragacha High School of Nadia. He passed IA from Bangabasi College. Due to financial crisis, he couldn’t appear for B.Sc examination. In 1960 , he got married to Sadhana Roy Chowdhury and had a daughter. He had worked in Titagarh Paper Mill, G.K. Sports and also as PWD contractor.He was also a teacher of South Point School.
Shekhar was closely attched to theatre in PLT . His immense talent was recognized at that early stage by director Jyotirmoy Roy who offered him a role in “Taka Aana Pai” in 1956. Sabar Upore(1955), Dakater haate(1962), Abhijaan (1962), Nishan (1978) , Basundhara (1986) are some of his movies. He had even acted in several theatres, plays and television serials.He had directed the television serial “Simana”. In 1986, he acted in his own famous theatre production “Pantoo Laha” which was invited in the International Brecht Seminar , Hong Kong. He had traveled abroad in Europe, Hong Kong, Bangladesh.
In 1984, he got the coveted Rajat Kamal Award in the Regional Language Film Category for his first and last directed film “Basundhara”. In 1989, he was awarded Sangeet Natyak Award. He was the active member of IPTA and later formed Theatre Unit in 1958. In 1983, he established Unit Theatre. He passed away on 6th April, 1990.
