After Shatrughan Sinha, if any person from Bihar is called up, who has created an abiding impression in Bollywood, one has to name Shekhar Suman, who besides making his appearence acclaimed and acknowledged on television, has gained a considerable ground in films. Shekhar Suman was born on June 14, 1954 at Patna, Bihar. He had his schooling at Pataliputra School . After his graduation he came to Mumbai with a desire to appear on the silver-screen. After a span of struggle he chanced to act in the male lead for the T.V serial "Wah Janab" opposite Kiran Juneja. Following some brief appearences in some television shows, he got the bonanza in acting under Shashi Kapoor's banner in the film "Utsav'. He was in the male lead opposite Rekha. The film was directed by Girish Karnad. His performances were appreciated. Some intimate scenes with Rekha became controversial. The next film to reckon with was "Rehguzar"( 1985). In 19 86 Shekhar acted opposite Sudha Chandar in "Naache Mayuri". The film was, however, heroine-oriented but Shekhar did not go unnoticed. This was followed by "Sansar"('87), "O Phir Aayegi"('88)," Tere Bin Kya Jeena"('89), "Anjane","Pati Parameswar"('90), "Professor Ki Padosan"('93) and so on. Still, Shekhar Suman has been a paramount figure on television. His own production "Movers and Shakers" became a big success. As a host he has been so dynamic, witty and eloquent that people of all ranks and files liked the programme very much. His mimic art and aping prominent personalities provided fun on the one hand, and he became an eye-sore to others. The greatest achievement of Shekhar is , of course, his endeavours in enhancing laughter to the level of art. His programme "The Great Indian Laughter Challenge", for a time span, surpassed the popularity of films and mega-serials. But the programme generated a great deal of controversy. Shekhar also played host for "Dial One aur Jeeto" on Sahara T.V. His programme "Poll Khol" on Star News, once again brought about moots and contentions. In fact, Shekhar is more concerned about politics and politicians than films. His gift of the gab is a plus point which non-pluses men of politics and the virtue returns as vice.
Shekhar Suman is a happy husband to his wife Alka Kapoor. The irreparable loss of his eldest son Aayush has moved the bereaved father to found a hospital in his home town Patna.
