    In Shri 420 the number denotes the number of the section of the Indian Penal Code that applies to confidence tricks and other minor offences. In India the number is commonly used to designate those with a propensity to commit such offences. Raju. a simpleton by nature gets trapped in the crooked cobweb of an ultra modern city and is translated into a "420" and decieves his dear cronies on the footpath, and discovers that he is a "420" to himself as well as to his love.

    In Shri 420 Raju (Raj Kapoor) who loves Vidya (Nargis), eventually falls into the coils of the vamp, Maya "(Nadira), which gives the film a platform for scenes of "decadence" : gambling dens, nightclubs, cabarets, all of which, in Indian cinema, represent moral degradation. On becoming a key man in the entourage of a diehard capitalist, a friend of Maya's, Raju is asked to cheat the homeless. He rebels, regains the purity of his heart and makes off with his beloved.

    During the making of Shri420, Mukesh was busy with his own acting career (he was hero opposite Usha Kiron in Anuraag, 1956). The success 'voice' for Raj Kapoor in the director's earlier superhit Awara, Mukesh sang only Mera joota hai Japani, Ichak daana and a small stanza in Ramaiya vastavaiya for Shri 420.
    The talented Manna Dey benefitted most. He sang the classic Pyar hua iqrar hua besides Dil ka haal sune dilwala and Mud mud ke na dekh.

    The movie Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (1992), directed by Aziz Mirza and produced by G. P. Sippy has the basic idea taken from Shri 420. Even the story of Bas Itna Sa Khwab Hai (2001), directed by Goldie Behl is inspired by Shri 420
