Subhendu Chatterjee was one of the most adorable and gifted actor of Bengali Film Industry who had kept his imprint still now in the hearts of millions of movie lovers. Subhendu Chatterjee was born on 29th November, 1936. His father Shailendra Chattopadhay and mother Manimala Devi used to call him by the name Subho. In 1953 , after passing his final school examination , he got admitted to Calcutta Medical College . In 1960 , he finally completed his M.B.B.S and became a doctor by profession. During this time, he was involved with amateur theatre and then he tried his luck in films. As a doctor , he used to work in Civil Defence and later joined Kolkata Municipal Corporation. He was also involved with I.P.T .He had two sons , one of them is a leading actor of Bengali industry, Saswata Chatterjee.
He got his first break in Mrinal Sen’s “Akash Kusum” in 1965 where he excelled as an actor and proved his mettle. Satyajit Ray’s “ Chiriyakhana” was a landmark in his career whose talent was widely recognized already then. After that , Satyajit Ray’s “Aranyaner Din Ratri”(1969) brought national and international fame to Subhendu. Chowringee (1968), Hansa Mithun (1968), Panchasar(1968), Chaddabeshi (1972) etc are some of his noteworthy movies. He was again seen in the sequel of “Aranyaner Din Ratri” which was directed by Gautam Ghose (“Abar Aranye “ in 2003).He was highly praised for his mind-blowing performances in Rituparno Ghose’s Dahan (1997), Buddhadev Dasgupta’s Lal Darja (1997).In 1968, he went to Frankurt, Germany to represent as an actor of his film “Panchasar”. This great actor passed away on 5th July, 2007 after suffering from lung and respiratory track complications .
According to Soumitra Chatterjee , in his death Bengali Cinema “lost one of its best actors and a perfect gentleman”.
