Shyamal Ghoshal (born 15th August, 1934) is a Bengali actor of high repute. He passed his B.A and after that , joined Police training College and passed L and Criminologist exams. From 1950-1954, he worked as a Technician in Indian Air Force. After that, he was a sub inspector of West Bengal Police . Due to his immense love for acting, his job got affected and police force asked him to choose between job and duty. In spite of financial crisis, he left the job and later joined Khardah Jutemill and Naihati JuteMill as Personal Officer. He was a good horse rider and tennis player.
In 1958, he made his debut in the lead role in “Headmaster” (1959) based on the story of Narendra Mitra. His work in Satyajit Ray’s Chiriyakhana was a landmark in his career. But he also had to leave his job as he couldn’t attend his duties all the time due to busy acting schedule. Mahanagar(1963), Charulate(1964), Srikanter will (1979), Lalmohan (1986) are some his noteworthy movies. He had even worked in Doordarshan serials and formed a theatre group of his own. He was mainly a stage artist and was associated with famous group theatre ‘Bahuroopi’ under the tutelage of Sambhu Mitra.
