    Kiska Sikandar ??

Majid Majidi is one of the world’s finest director and has an art of making films with children’s, which are not kid’s movies but movies with total hard hitting issues. Recently in our Hindi cinema directors have decided to adapt the Iranian director’s style and tried to blend it with our Indian surroundings. We had few good results like Taare Zameen par, Tahaan, etc and few bad ones. Director Piyush Jha tries to join the list of those inspired director with a subject based on backdrop of Kashmir. With such a burning issue let’s find out how till what level of reality does this film tries to capture.

Sikandar {Parzaan Dastur}, an orphan who loves to play football and resides in the valley of Kashmir. He is beaten by some bullies in his school who does not like him playing football against them. At that moment of time Sikandar meets Nasreen {Ayesha Kapoor} and both of them become best of friends. One day they both find a gun lying in their path, sikandar gets tempted and takes it for playing. He also uses the gun to scare the bullies and others. Slowly he starts to enjoy the company of the gun. Later he is joined by Zehgir {Arunoday Singh} a Jehadi leader who wants to eliminate a Jehadi converted to Political leader {Sanjay Suri}. Zehgir teaches Sikandar how to operate the gun and promises him a big reward. What happens next is all the film about.

Story is Simple and yet quite different, the writers have tried to develop an interesting tale, but somewhere misses the bus. Screenplay is bit weak in first half of the film and gradually increases in the second half but with very slow speed resulting to bit good twist and turns towards the anti climax. Sadly the climax is bit let down and is total out and out filmy type of climax. One does not want to see such climax in these types of films. Editing needs to be bit tight at many places. Camera work is good but nothing great, also it fails to capture the beauty of Kashmir in comparison with Tahaan.

Music is good, especially Chale Bhi Aao which is brilliantly shot and sung. Background music is bit bad and irritating at times.

Director Piyush Jha started his career with an flop film Chalo America but support of producer Sudhir Mishra got a good concept to work on. Sadly he fails to deliver the necessary punch which was required from such films. Also the lack of emotions which is required for such types of films also works against the film. probably he was not able to deiced whether to keep the film total hard hitting or make it in masala way, sadly he ended up with combination of both resulting to an average film.

On performance level both the kids have done a great job, full marks to them. Parzaan looked so innocent and Ayesha looked so graceful. It’s the kids who keep you glued to the film because of their performance. R.Madhavan, Sanjay Suri, Rahul Singh are wasted in small role. New Comer Arunoday Singh looked like villain of 80’s-90’s who keeps doing some screen tactics and style which looked too cleshade in this film.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ is film mein kitna hain dum ?

Dum hain acha khaasa dum hain but kaafi kutch kam bhi hain. A good concept which needed maybe some more matured direction ends up to a average product. But worth a watch for the performances and some good twist and turns. I remember when we had an out and out masala film where the name Sikandar was used was Muqadaar Ka Sikandar, but thanks to the makers who decided to play safe by making this film a combo of Masala film and realistic film makes me wonder that yeh Sikandar kiska sikandar hain ?
