Singham rating: 7 out of 10(Somak Basu wrote on 21 Jul 2011)

Action Packed Movies along with Heroism is back fully. WANTED started it, DABANGG continued it, BBUDDHA HOGA TERA BAAP nourished it and finally SINGHAM signifies it. Singham draws a portrait of a policeman that the citizens think should be and overall wanted to be. 'Maardhaar-masala' type movies like 70s to 80s were a rage at the time that was abolished at a stake by sissy romance movies. But somewhere one does feel that movies like SINGHAM are very outdated in today's generation. But if you want to make your "ACTION da keeda"s rise & shine in your nerves, SINGHAM's a perfect excuse.

Amitabh Bachchan, Veeru Devgan, Dharmendra were our all time fav macho action stars, and then came Ajay Devgn, Suniel Shetty, Akshay Kumar, Sunny Deol and more to bring the action life back at theaters. SINGHAM is just a tough attempt to bring back those glorious days back today. Also GOOD vs. EVIL is the genre that SINGHAM rediscovers in Bollywood today. DABANGG tried its luck and marked an all-time blockbuster tag in Bollywood. Let's see what SINGHAM has in its fate. Although, Ajay Devgn has clarified that SINGHAM has nothing to do with DABANGG, I again clarify that it really is a very different story. But its introduction shot is very similar to DABANGG. Guess, DABANGG did something with SINGAM(Tamil) then.

SINGHAM is a start-to-end remake of Superhit Tamil Action Movie SINGAM(2010). The story revolves around Shivgad, a small village in on the border of Maharashtra and Goa, where the most famous & fav cop is none other than Bajirao Singham [Ajay Devgn]. He is a handsome, smart & angry young cop who fights crime with his own ethics. Jaykant Shikre [Prakash Raj], the antagonist and the most powerful personality clashes with Bajirao when he is bound to attend Shivgad police station for one of his criminal affairs. Jaykant's contacts & witty planning makes Singham land on Jaykant's city Colva, Goa where he makes Singham's life a nightmare to live. Singham's supportive girlfriend Kavya [Kaajal Aggarwal] & late Rakesh Kadam's family mainly Megha Kadam[Sonali Kulkarni] make Singham realize that a change in the system must come & by the demolition of the system maker Jaykant, it can come. His smart police moves, plans & pulse-pounding action is the gripper thereafter.

The soul of the movie is the massive action scenes by Jai Singh Nijjar & some really good special moves [like Ajay's coming out of the car not applying any brake] by Rohit Shetty himself. The hardcore, spontaneous action scenes makes the movie a perfect action flick. Dialogues by Farhad
Sajid are fairly good [some very good], even it doesn't create that DABANGG hype. Amar Mohile's background score heats the atmosphere on action scenes. The screenplay by Yunus Sajawal is mainly 'masala' based but works well for masses. Editing by Steven H. Bernard is cool.

Some scenes are really '+' factor for the movie and identifies Rohit's perfection in handling a wild action movie like -

    1. Singham's entry [similar to DABANGG]
    2. SINGHAM song
    3. The fight sequence at the movie theater where Kaajal was misbehaved by some goons and Ajay bashed them
    4. The scene which revolves around Ajay's kicking butt of the politician [Anant Jog] especially when Ashok Saraf kicks him
    5. Ajay's dealing with Jaykant's goons
    6. The mind-blowing climax

Singham stands in Ajay Devgn's one of the best works of all time. Actually, unlike Salman, Ajay was the best choice for this role. The larger-than-life angry cop and the main lead of the Good Vs. Evil war, this role had to be done with extreme perfection and so does Ajay do. Kaajal had nothing much to do, but as a supportive character to the hero, she was good & this was a great Bollywood debut of her.

SINGHAM is an out-and-out Prakash Raj movie. What you haven't watched in WANTED and BBUDDHA, you will surely find here in him. He is born to handle negative roles perfectly and Singham proves it. Every dialog, every expression, every thinking of his character - everything proves that Prakash Raj is a dynamic actor. Even though I recommend Prashant Narayanan [Murder 2] more, Prakash Raj is a tough competition to him this year. Others like Sonali Kulkarni, Ashok Saraf and Govind Namdev are effective on the movie.

On the whole, Singham is a hardcore masala movie with every essential in a perfect quantity in it. Ajay Devgn, Rohit Shetty & most of all, Prakash Raj - the trio makes every perfection possible for the movie. Even its remake of a Tamil super-successful movie, SINGHAM stands straight for its solo toughness and Desi entertainer formula.

Take the challenge with SINGHAM, it will knock you out for sure.
