With the rise of Video era in 80’s the elite class preferred to stay home and cinema halls were source of entertainment for mostly the masses. 90’s bought back the Romantic era which were loved by both the sections of movie viewers. With the rise of multiplex and new style of cinema the masses were left on the mercy of Mithun films initially followed by Bhojpuri films which was overtaken by South Indian Dubs. The best part of these films were they were made for one pure reason – Entertainment. The industry overlooked them as the revenue earned by these films was with very little profit, as they were made with less budget or low selling price. Things changed when these films started entering the Satellite channels and home video, which increased the level, demand and liking for such films. Finally it was Aamir Khan’s ‘Ghajni’ & Salman Khan’s ‘Wanted’ which pulled these types of films from their niche to worldwide audience. These films were loved by the masses and even the elite multiplex class {Whatever the keeping saying or showing, at end of the day they too have grown up on the diet of such films}, and then started the flow of such films with big stars, big budget and big box office collection too. After the Khan’s enjoying the success, Ajay Devgan returns back to what he was known for – Action with pure entertainment. So let’s find out will the lady luck smile at him or might end up being a mock of the khans?

“SINGHAM” is story of Honest Insp.Bajirao Singham {Ajay Devgan} from a small village in Goa. One day he and his villagers have a tiff with a powerful Criminal Jaykant Shikre (Prakash Raj). This hurts the ego of Jaykant Shikre and thus in order to take his revenge, he gets Bajirao transferred to Goa City. Bajirao is helpless and along in the big city where everyone from cop to politicians are in favor of Jaykant Shikre. How does he fight back is what the entire film about.

Story is simple and typical bollywood masala style. Wished it had some more angles to this enmity between the cop and criminal. As most of masala entertainers have some good and outstanding scene, Singham too roars with such scenes like The Prakash Raj’s Kidnapping style, The whole ‘Gotya’ teasing, Ajay Devgans fight with local goons in cinema hall, The tiff between Ajay Devgan and Prakash Raj followed by Prakash Raj irritating Ajay after his transfer to Goa city, Ashok Saraf’s advice to Ajay Devgan, The whole F.I.R Chapter, Ajay firing Murli Sharma, teaching lesson to the minister, Ashok Saraf’s frustration of being a cop, Ajay at Police party followed by All the cops cornering Prakash Raj and few more. On the flip side the whole romantic track between Ajay and Kajal Aggarwal was not up to the mark, also the first half has lots of unnecessary scenes which were just dragging around, The loudness too keeps bothering you in between along bit some over the top actions scenes and the final climax scene which looks bit weak in comparison with the high graph of entertainment in the second half. Dialogs are superb and will make you cheer and applause for sure. The second half is totally power packed with dialogs, fights and high voltage drama barring the climax. Editing was nice but some work could have helped in the first half of the film. Camera work is fine.

Music by Ajay Atul is pretty average. The title track is kind of ok type followed by Maula. Saathiya is the best track in the film. Background music is bit loud.

Rohit Shetty has mastered in comedy films with some good action scene followed by car breaking fights. But one forgets that his debut film was ‘Zameen’ which was an action drama also he belongs to the family of ace fight master Shetty. So this film is perfect from Rohit shetty and he does full justice to it, keeping in mind his style of film making. One can find some influence from scenes of films like Sahenshah, Amar Akbar Anthony, Zanjeer, Pratibandh etc.

Ajay Devgan looks smashing and returns back to his original home –Action Films. His style of dialog delivery and actions scenes keep your eyes glued to the silver screen. Kajal was not at all impressive. Prakash Raj was fantastic, especially in the second half; all his actions, mannerisms and dialogs will be loved and copied by many. Wish he had done something different in the climax which reminded us of his performance from Wanted and Bbuddah Hoga Teraa Baap. Ashok Saraf was superb. Ashok Samarth & Anant Jog were good. Murli Sharma and Sonali Kulkarni were wasted. Sachin Khedekar was irritating.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ is film mein kitna hai Dum ?

Dum hai, Second half mein kaafi Dum hai. The film makers does justice to the original south Indian film and makes the film for its targeted audience. Yes Ajay Devgan too will taste the success of mass entertainer like the khans did and we hope that the Indian audience {Masses and Classes} get more and more such entertainers with big star powers. This is what films are for a common man and don’t forget everyone has such common man within itself. In short the film is like a good lion safari, where you don’t have to worry or think hard – Just enjoy the show till it last.
