    A gifted- performer stays unaffected in any walk, no matter whether it is on the beaten track or off-the track. Smita was equally at home in the parellal cinema as well as in main-stream. In the film "Kasam Paida Karne Wale ki", Smita is a rebel mother who wants to avange the murder of her husband by the villain Amrish Puri. She determines to groom her child to turn out to be tough to destroy the villain. In a scene, the tough mother lets her baby get drenched in rain to be seasoned for all odds

    At a time, when Smita Patil's name was pronounced with Shabana Azmi, Shayam Benegal used both of them in his film "Mandi", in which Smita acted the role of Shabana's daughter. The film was based on the "red-light-area" dealing with their socio-economic problems. The mother--daughter relationship, brought forth by these two genius actress is simply a document to be treasured.

    Smita Patil was brilliantly used by Rabindra Dharmaraj in his film "Chakra" which was shot in Mumbai slums. Here, Smita is a slum-dweller suffering the cat and dog life. Finally, the slums were demolished and Smita, like other dwellers, were evicted. The deglamourised Smita, by viirtue of her involvement, became true to life.

    In Utpalendu Chakroverty's "Devshisu" Smita gives birth to a two-headed baby who is sold to a showman Om Puri. As the bizarre-featured baby becomes a fortune to the showman, Smita's husband insists her on giving birth to such issue so as to tide over their plight of poverty. The mother in Smita torments her maternal self to see the sold child. In the Show when the audiences were looking at the "Devshisu", the wonder child, Smita was ardently looking at her begotten one.

    Mrinal Sen took Smita Patil for his film "Akaler Sandhane"(In search of femine) in which Smita rendered her superb performances as an actress. The movie projects film within film. How a metamorphosis comes about to an actress has been shown in it. Before the camera Smita is a poverty-trodden rustic lady being evicted from hearth. Off the camera she is an elegant actress, so smart and dynamic. Her ambi-dexterous performances can never be forgotten.

    Smita Patil was taken by Satyajit Ray, the legend of Indian film history in his second Hindi venture "Sadgati", a story by Munshi Premchand. It was the first colour tele-film. Smita was opposite Om Puri. Smita's outburst at the death of her husband carried away the masses. Smita was so dear to Manik-da.
