Soma De was born in 18th October, 1947 in Kolkata Her nickname was Sumi. Soma’s father was Upen Chandra Dey and mother was Parul Dey. She passed Higher Secondary Examination from St. Margaret School and B.A from Scottish Church College.
At first she was selected by director-cameraman Ajoy Kor for the film Kayahiner Kahini. By finally she didn’t act in this film due to some unavoidable condition. Her first film debut “Niranjan Sanlap” by Archan Chakraborty was not released. Her first released film was “Haray Khunji” directed by Swadesh Sirkar. It was released in 1974. She was acted as heroine in Bengali Film, atleast 25 in number including “Selam Memsaheb”, “Bar Badhu”, “Sagar Balaka”, “Rakte Lekha” and “Karma”. Her real name was Sumita. She took the name Soma for the film. She was the only actress in Bengal who left her family for the film sake and lived in Y.W.C.A boarding an unmannered life. She got married to actor Vivek Chattopadhay and have one son. She also acted in television serials. She had also knack for dancing.
