  • Special indeed, but not like ‘A Wednesday’…

Special 26 rating: 8 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 08 Feb 2013)

Five years back a small film starring two great actors got released and was one of the biggest surprise hit of that time. This movie satisfied the thirst of both – good movie lovers & box office collections. We had hardly witnessed such type of theme and treatment in Hindi Cinema, ‘A Wednesday’ was a total treat for movie lovers. This movie had fantastic writing along with outstanding performances by Naseeruddin Shah & Anupam Kher. But above all of these it was the vision of the director – Neeraj Pandey which made this movie what it was. Movie lovers were waiting to see the next venture from this new talented director and after a half decade he comes back with his latest offering – ‘Special 26’. Right from its interesting promo, eye catching poster, unusual theme and director’s name attached to it this movie has raised the expectation level to its top most form. So let’s find out whether this film has some special merits in it or not?

‘Special 26’ is set in 1987, when a team of C.B.I [Akshay Kumar, Anupam Kher, Rajesh Sharma &Kishore Kadam ] keeps conducting raid at various places. Once in the raid over minister’s bungalow they seek help from local police station in charge Ranvir Singh [Jimmy Shergil]. Ranvir Singh later comes to know that these people not the real C.B.I officers, but conman’s. He reports this matter to real C.B.I officer Waseem Khan {Manoj Bajpayee]. Waseem starts weaving a net for these conman’s, what happens next is what the entire film is all about.

Story is interesting and based on the real facts. The backdrop of late 80’s (when there was no internet or computerized records) is superbly used out here. [Spoiler Alerts Begins] Movie has several interesting scenes like the whole first raid at ministers house followed by Manoj’s chase in Connaught Place-Delhi, Calcutta raid, Manoj & team monitoring Akshay & gang, The whole interview planning and process followed by Manoj’s interrogation, Manoj meet with Akshay, The Final raid along with the twist towards the end and many more. [Spoiler Alert Ends]All these scenes make you indulged in the film and making you wonder what happens next.
On the flip side the whole love track between Akshay & Kajal Agarwal is terrible and spoils the flow of the film. None of the songs are good and all the songs dilute the impact of the film. Also, the Sp.Effects in the second half were jarring. Camera work is good and loved the way they captured the whole late 80’s era. Editing is perfect, except for the songs and unwanted romantic scenes.
Music is very bad and hampers the film in big way. None of the songs are worth mentioning. But on the other side huge applause for the back ground music score which is fantastic.

Director Neeraj Pandey decides to create a thriller set in late 80’s and gives us another great piece of cinema. His way of treating this film is superb and satisfies the expectation level. Though in comparison with ‘A Wednesday’ this movie might fall bit low; thanks to the unwanted songs and side tracks. He should have kept the movie directly to the point and avoided the commercial glitches. It’s very difficult task to make a film based on one liner news article and that too in a thriller format. Lots of creativity goes in it and the end result has to be universal appealing. Thus we thank him for giving us a special film which will be enjoyed by thriller and good movie lovers.

Akshay Kumar is superb in this film. Check him in all the raid scenes where he slips down totally inside the skin of the character. Anupam Kher gives another good performance, his character syncs perfectly with his age. Manoj Bajpayee is outstanding in this film and you will love his character along with fierce performance. Jimmy Shergil is good support. Rajesh Sharma & Kishore Kadam are perfect in their part. Kajal Agarwal was unwanted along with Neetu Chandra in the item song. Tiku Talsania, Divya Dutta, Vipin Sharma are good in their parts.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ iss film mein kitna hain Dum ?

Dum hain in terms of an indulging thriller along with great performances. If you are expecting something out of this world like ‘A Wednesday’ then let me warn you, you might end up getting bit disappointed. But on individual merits this movie is total special and will be cherished by all the movie lovers.
