A pious hermit was singing the hymns of Dasaavatara before his followers. At the end of his song he started telling the story of the kind Indradumna and queen Gundicha and how they got the blessings of Lord Jagannath. Gundicha came to Indradumna and expressed her frustrations for not being able to get the idol of Lord Jagannath. Indradumna consoled her saying that the almighty was probably trying their faith. Out of acute frustration the queen decided to kill herself the next day. Raja called in his men. Narad came and requested the king to find Neelmadhav who had taken the shape of the lord Jitendra., Bimbadhar and Molupate were ordered to go in the south and west directions. The obedient Vidyapati went to search for Neelmadhav in the eastern side. He passed through the forest and overcame many dangers. Once Vidyapati’s friend went away in search of water. There came a little boy came who offered him water. After that Vidyapati again started searching for Neelmadhav in the dense jungle. Then he saw a young lady playing blind man's buff with her maids-in-waiting.. The lady helped by giving him a room in her house. Vidyapati started getting attracted to her, Lalita. From her he learnt that Neelmadhav was the family deity of the Sabaras. After disclosing this secret, Lalita feared her father's wrath. Saktidhar, friend of Vidyapati meanwhile came back to Vidyapati and got introduced to Lalita. Lalita’s father did not approve of her intimacy with Vidyapati. But soon Vidyapati married to Lalita and lived happily. In the palace, Gundicha became impatient for Vidyapati. When Vidyapati was enjoying with Lalita, the child Krishna came to him and reminded him of his duties. Tactfully Vidyapati managed to see Neelmadhav. Vidyapati then went back with Lalita beside him. They then set out for Utkala for Neelmadhav. But this was a difficult goal and Narad advised them to perform the horse sacrifice. More rituals followed and finally the temple was set up for devotees the world over.
