On of the most talented and successful actresses in Bollywood, Sridevi was born on August 13, 1963 in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu as Sri Amma Ayyangar. Her mother, Rajeswari was a character artist in Telegu films. Sridevi started acting at the age of four and has starred in a number of Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and Malayalam films.

Sridevi started her career as a child artist in the Tamil movie Kandhan Karunai (1967). Her first big break in Tamil movies came with the 1976 film Moondru Mudichu, where she starred opposite Kamal Haasan and Rajnikanth. The film was also one of Rajnikanth's first major movies. She started her film career in Hindi cinema as a child arstist in Julie (1975). She got her first break in Bollywood in 1978 with the film, Solva Saawan which failed at the box office. However, her second movie, Himmatwala (1983), went on to become a huge success and established her in Bollywood. The 80s belonged to Sridevi. To start with, came the critically acclaimed masterpiece Sadma (1983) which remains the most definitive child-woman performance of her career. Then came a galaxy of superhit films like Tohfa, Nagina, Mr. India, Chandni, and Chaalbaaz. Sridevi became the No.1 star and the highest paid actor during this time. Nagina is still remembered for her iconic dance sequences. Shekhar Kapur's all-time hit Mr. India won her rave reviews for her classic comic-timing. Yash Chopra's poetic fairy-tale Chandni proved to be her most spectacular hit. Yash Chopra again directed her in the path-breaking modern day classic Lamhe (1991), where her sensitive and intense double-role act immortalised her forever in Hindi Cinema. The superstar ruled on with powerful performances like Khuda Gawah, Gumrah and Ladla.

So successful was Sridevi at her peak, that she was approached by Steven Spielberg for a role in Jurassic Park, which she refused because of her bollywood commitments. She has given some of the biggest hits of the 80s and early 90s. Sridevi is perhaps the only Bollywood starlet that remained as the number one actress for over a decade. The failure of the multicrore Roop ki Rani Choron ka Raja proved to be a major setback. Following this came a string of flops like Mr Bechara, Guru, Gurudev, Baanjaran, Farishtey. In 1997 she tasted success again with the superhit film, Judaai. This was her last film. After a six-year hiatus, an aged Sridevi returned to the small screen, briefly, in the popular Sahara sitcom Malini Iyer (2004-2005). Sridevi is married to producer Boney Kapoor and has two daughters, Jhanvi and Khushi. She is slated to return to the big screen in a big way this year.

In the 1980s, Jaya Prada and Sridevi were fierce rivals. During the shooting of Maqsad, Rajesh Khanna and Jeetendra locked the two actresses in the same makeup room hoping they would make up. Two hours later, when they opened the door, they found the actresses sitting at opposite ends of the room in silence. Sridevi was cast in a dual role in 1993's Baazigar. However, the director felt that the audience would never be able to sympathize with Shah Rukh Khan's character if he 'killed' Sridevi on screen. The role was re-written and two different actresses (Shilpa Shetty and Kajol) were hired to play the roles originally meant for La Devi. Sridevi was the original choice for the role in 'Beta' that made Madhuri Dixit a superstar. She turned the role down, because she felt she was already doing too many films with Anil Kapoor.
