  • Unusual film drawing in lot people

Sthaniyo Sangbad rating: 4 out of 10(Aditya Chakrabarty wrote on 29 Nov 2010)

Sthaniyo Sangbad actually means local news, but the film is not only about the locality but also about certain other factors which try to make it a complete film.We have films like this before where two or three stories run parallel without having a direct link, yet at some point they all meet at a common point to make it a complete film.Even here it is similar where two stories one of Atin and his love or Ananya and the other of the two guys who stole her plaid run side by side and the other different characters in the film make it more worthwhile to watch.

Deshbandhu colony comprising of a settlement of refugees is situated on the southern fringes of Calcutta.

Atin, the dreamy poet and Ananya's secret admirer, of the locality is worried in not finding her anywhere the next day. She is very important to him and he confesses this to Deepankarda, his friend, philosopher and guide in the locality. His house is also facing demolition along with the homes of several others.

The two people who stole Ananya’s plaid want to sell it to raise money for a computer course. They are desperate to pursue higher education - by any means.

Five guys of the locality spend the entire day idling away their time on the streets doing nothing. Two elderly men, one who runs a shop and the other his customer spend time discussing life and people of the neighbourhood in general.

Atin tells Dipankarda about his love for Ananya and Dipankar offers to help him. He tells Atin that he most probably saw her go somewhere and Atin confirms that it is Park Street therefore Dipankar offers to take Atin to Park Street in search of Ananya and at the same time the two guys are also out on a strange journey of their own where they try to sell the plaid, but are unable to do it and even land up at New Town at night where they come upon Mr. Paul of Paul &Paul who is going to construct a mall in the neighbourhood where they stay. They are turned away and later on Mr. Paul gets rid of them. Somewhere along the path, Dipankar tells Atin about Ananya's family buying an apartment in the new building that is about to raze their colony tenements to the ground.

Atin decides to spend the entire night outside and only go back in the morning. At around dawn, he comes across Mr. Paul and hands him a copy of his collection of his poems which he had found at the construction site. Mr. Paul who has a knack for poetry is pleased and hands Atin his card before leaving and asks him to get in touch with him later as he might have some work for him.

Atin goes back to his neighbourhood only to discover that overnight his home along with homes of several others has been razed to the ground.

Is the film about the problems of the colony and it’s immediete problems or is the film about Atin and his search of Ananya? That is something one has to decide. The director cum producer has tried to show something around those lines. The film does entertain in the initial stages, but then it somewhat drags. The film does not have any known faces by way of actors, rather the only known faces in the film are Suman Mukhopadhay, the filmmaker who is seen in this film as an actor (as Deepankarda) in fact and he has done quite a decent job.Bratya Basu is also associated with this film just as an actor (as Mr.Paul) and he is okay.

The film is drawing a large number of audience to the theatres without having any known names and the film is a very low profile one so that is something to be noted.Manali Dey of 'Bou Katha Kou' fame who made her big screen debut with Achin Pakhi has a bit role role and is completely wasted.
