Suchitra Sen was born in 1931. His father Karunamoy Dasgupta was the head master of local school and her mother name was Indira Dasgupta. She was fifth Child and third daughter.
Suchitra Sen’s original name was Rama Dasgupta. She married Dibanath Sen, a wealthy Bengali industrialist in 1947.
Suchitra debut film was ‘Shesh Kothai’ made in 1952. But “Shesh Kothai” was not released.
Her first box-office hit was “Share Chuattor” in 1953. In this film she acted opposite Uttam Kumar.After that Uttam- Suchitra as leading pair become icons for Bengali cinema for more than 20 years. Her patented Bengali melodramas and romances especially with Uttam Kumar, made her most famous Bengali actress ever.
She also acted in Hindi films against Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar, Sanjiv Kumar etc. In “Aandhi” in 1974, she played a politician inspired by Indira Gandhi.
She was awarded in Moscow Film Festival in 1963 as a best actress for the film “Saat Paake Bandha”.
Her only daughter Moon Moon Sen also acted in hindi and Bengali film. Moon Moon’s daughter Riya and Raima are also actress in Bengali and Hindi cinema.
She retired from the screen in 1978 after a carrier over 25 years. She now lives a life of a recluse like Greeta Garbo of Hollywood.
