Sulata Choudhury was born in Kolkata in the year 1945. Her real name was Maya Roychowdhury. Her father was Atala Chandra Roychowdhury.
Suchitras’ schooling was in Oriental Secondary (North) School. But she left education due to her passion in dancing and singing.
Her film career started with a very small role “Deborsree Nartader Sansar” in 1960. Later through film journalist Kailash Mukhopadhay she met director Sudhir Mukhopadhay. He made contract with her for five years. As a heroine she made her film debut in “Sesh Paryanta” directed by Sudhir Mukhopadhay. Her duration of contract was from 1961 to 1964. During this time Satyajit Ray offered her a role in “Mahanagar”. But due to her contract, she could not accept it. She acted in many Bengali films.
Sulata learnt dance from Ramnarayan Mishra. She regularly acted in Utpal Dutta’s Little Theatre. She also acted in professional stages.
She got President Award for the film “Dadathakur”.
She died on 16th September, 1940.
