Sumitra Devi was born in Sueri on 22nd, July 1927. Her real name was Nilima Chattopadhay. Her father was Murlidhar Chattopadhay.
Her early education was in Mujaffarpur. But she left Bihar after the earth-quake and came to Kolkata. Her schooling was in Deshbandhu Girls School. She appeared in Matriculation Examination.
She made her film debut in the film “Sandhi” directed by Apruba Mitra in 1944. She acted in Bengali Film Industry from 1944 to 1964 including films like “Pather Daabi”, “Dasyu Mohon”, “Saheb Bibi Golam”, “Ek Din Ratre” and “Kinu Goyaker Goli”. She also acted in Hindi Films. She had been married thrice. First she was married in Bhopalpur. Then she was married with Devi Mukhopadhay in October 1946. Sumitra Devi let film industry when her husband committed suicide. They got one son. Due to financial crisis Sumitra Devi was forced to join the film industry again. Her third and last husband was Mr. Sharma. She had a knack for photography.
Sumitra Devi died in Bombay on 28th August, 1990.
