Sunanda was born in Kolkata on 3rd August, 1921. Her original name was Ela. Director Nitin Bose named her Sunanda. Her father was Jagadish Mukhopadhay.
First in Duff School, then in Shyambazar Balika Vidyapith, she read upto class VI. She could not continue her studies due to her marriage with Sudhir Bandopadhay at the age of only 13. She started her acting career at the age of seven in the silent movie “Nirdito Bhagyoban”. Then from 1928 to 1943, she did not acted in any film. In 1944 she again came in front of the camera in the film “Kashinath” directed by Nitin Bose. She acted in so many Bengali Film including “Biraj Bou”, “Indira”, “Basanta Bahor”, “Maa”, “Kana Machi”, “Bhogoni Nivedita”, “Bile Narem” Etc. She learnt recitation from Birendra Krishna Bhadra. She was fond of songs and dancing. She edited Niharika a magazine successfully. She also produced films. She was a mother of one son and one daughter. She died in Kolkata 28th August 1966.
