Susman is a typical Shyam Benegal signature film where he highlights the struggles of the working class and the fallouts of capitalism. He clearly shows that industrialization was a boon and a curse at the same time for the society.
Ramulu(played by Om Puri) represents the weaver class whose passion for his work brought him closer to his loom and its potential. This however alienates him from his community. His creativity and efficiency at his loom fetches him lucrative orders and being fiercely sincere in his work, he compromises on social relationships. The locale of the story is Pochampally which is traditionally known for its silks.
