Buddhadeb dasgupta’s “Swapner Din” (Chased by a dream) which invites a variety of responses in primarily an exercise in narrative form. It tells a story of chasing a dream of three different people of different status. By avoiding rational distinctions between the “real” and “unreal”, it emerges a complex and audacious work, to rank with the best that Indian cinema has produced.
The story revolves round three principal characters: protagonist Paresh is a touring cinema projectionist. He earns his living by taking government educational films to remote villages. Chapal Paresh's temporary driver, want to take off to Dubai in anticipation of better life, and third one is Amina, a Muslim pregnant woman, on the run form the infamous Gujarat riots. In the way, Paresh and Chapal pick up amena who hopes to make it to her unnamed homeland to have her child. We know Buddha Deb Dasgupta’s favorite subject for film is “dream”. Most of his character whose lives are the film is based on director's own story and idea. based on dreams; dreams of love, dreams of homeland, dreams of creative achievement, dreams of social changes etc. Swapner Din is not a exception, all three character making their own journeys with their own dreams. They all making their owns a exception, all three character making their own journeys with their own dreams. They all making their owns journeys with their individual path.
The film “Swapner Din” to initiate a process of imaging the pathos -the conscious and sub-conscious layer of human experiences in search of own identity. In this respect “Swapner Din” not only a film about chasing the dream but also a film about identity crisis under circumstances of political violence But director Buddhadeb Dasgupta should be careful in weaving the backdrop with the character, in creating the right kind of tension between the character and environment and in allowing his message to come about spontaneously, not straining for it. Director telling tale of three dream chased character, the primeval nature of their love and lust, their tears and smiles, set against the journey which almost features as a character in the story, has an epic canvas which should appeal to his camera -eye and his social insight.
It is not the film is entirely devoted of social details on the contrary, Dasgupta weaved a complex web of interpersonal and transpersonal relationships, but rather that what is an element of a purely personal nature -the creativity of the artist. The crisscross of fantasy and reality is highlighted by has tangible object from the realm of fantasy turning up in the world of reality. The design of the “Swapner Din” is such that the spectator is encouraged to judge actual picture of the Gujrat violence.
