Swapner Din is about Paresh (Prosenjit) and his dreams. Paresh is a Govt. Employee who travels to the interiors of Bengal with the duty and mission of enlighting and educating the downtrodden, illiterate masses. He demonstrate educational short documentaries with the help of a projector on issues like sex, education and literacy. He moves in a Govt. jeep and carries a Govt. projector machine. Paresh has a right-hand called Samindra Biswas (Subhashish Mukherjee) who assists him in these trips. But when Samindra leaves for meeting his new wife, (he practices polygamy) Paresh gets Chapal Kar (Rajesh) as his helper. Chapal is Samindra’s peer. He is a poor fellow who has an ambition to go to Dubai. Thus Paresh and Chapal leaves for this trip. On the way Chapal discovers that the lonely Paresh loves a girl who is non other than actress in one of Paresh’s film reels. Though Paresh knows that he would never find that “on-screen girl”, yet he dreams of meeting her one day. At this juncture they meet a Bangladeshi girl named Amina (Rimi Sen) and infiltrator by choice. She is a victim of the Gujrat Communal Riots by chance her husband has been slaughtered and she is penniless and pregnant looking to cross the border to reach her home. Paresh allows her in their jeep. But neither Paresh nor Chapal realize that Amina has a striking resemblance with the girl “In The Reels”. Mean while Paresh’s projector gets stolen and while searching for the machine a terrorist duo attack and hijack their jeep and fly away. A devastated Paresh calls up his office only to reveal that his seniors are there only to blame him. Finding no way out Paresh decides to follow Amina to Bangladesh. Chapal accompanies him. But while infiltrating the Indo-Bangladesh borders havoc wrecks upon the party. Chapal is shot by the Bangladeshi Jawans. Paresh and Amina flee and gets separated. Finally and exhausted Paresh reached the juncture from where his imagination (Raima Sen) or illusion beings to lead him towards his destination, IDRISPUR.
