Swatilekha was born on 22nd May 1950 in Kolkata. Her father was Ramakanta Halder and mother was Rama Halder. She passed Higher Seconadry exam from St. Mary Convent School and passed BA and MA in English from Jagatoron Girls College and Allahabad Univerity respectively.
Her debut film in Bengali was Satyajit Ray’s “Ghare Baire” in the role of female protagonist Bimala. Before that she acted in Ram and Jatayu, in the Hindi film “Bal Narayan” produced by Uttar Pradesh Govt. She got diploma in classical music of London. She also acted in Ronald Joffe’s “City of Joy”. She acted in Radio Drama, TV Serial and TV films. She was awarded by BFJA for the best actress for the film “Ghare Baire” in the year 1980. She also won the State Academy Award for the drama “Gotrohen”. She was a regular lead artist of Group Theatre named Nandikar. She married Rudraprasad Sengupta, famous actor director of Bengali Drama. She has one daughter Sohini who was also a actress.
