Taalnabomi is based on a story of Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay. Director Satyajit Ray also made his first film “Pather Panchali” based on the story of the same.
Taalnabomi is a film which shows childhood innocence, poverty and the story of two brothers, Nepal and Gopal, son of a poor bramhin. The kids sell Taal (Palm). Elder brother Nepal finds a business opportunity when their friend Chuni tells them that Jyoti Pishi will invite everyone in the village on the day of Taalnabomi. Taal (Palm) is an essential ingredient of the celebration, so Nepal thinks that he would sell lots of palms to Jyoti Pishi, but little Gopal is more interested to get invitation. So, he gives the palms for free to Jyoti Pishi, because Jyoti Pishi would be pleased and then they would be invited. But the poor fellow waits and waits, but the invitation never comes.
The main weakness of the film is its making. The treatment usedini the film makes the story very much predictable. But the village sceneries the rainfall are well used in the film. Samit Debnath’s cinematography have been better. The background music by Melodix fails to involve the audience with the film.
The good things in the film which are worth of watching are the two brothers, Nepal and Gopal, played by Sourav Das and Suparno Bhattacharya. This two kids have collected palm fruits, swimmed in a pond, played in mud, even did fishing and wore loincloths. They never seemed to be out of place or artificial. Especially that last scene where Gopal wearing a nice dress waits for the invitation, but immediately realizes that everyone is invited except tham and starts crying, makes everyone sad. Other actors have delivered extremely poor performances. But the reason, why Jyoti Pishi didn’t invite little Nepal and Gopal is no where explained in the movie. In “Pather Panchali” is was shown clearly that the women of the village disliked the little girl Durga as se used to steal something or the other. But here the director has not even mentioned a single reason for depriving those little kids while their other friends were invited.
The movie “Taalnabomi” has shown how the innocent children are realizing the difference between their dreams and reality. Undoubtedly, the children who would watch the film will also feel the same. But the drawback of the film is that the making makes the story predictable. The film also fails to attract the audience.
