Table No. 21 rating: 6 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 04 Jan 2013)

Thriller films based on Reality shows or some sort of contest having big winning prize but involving dangerous situations, etc have been quite popular in Hollywood films, here it is not up to the mark. Right from the days of Dharmendra’s ‘Shalimaar’ till date we have seen so many films on this theme, but naming one or two none of them managed to hit the right chord. Despite of being a failure genre in Hindi Films, Director Aditya Dutt comes up with a small film ‘Table No. 21’ with veteran actor Paresh Rawal along with a decent young comer Rajeev Khandelwal. The first thing which comes to your mind after watching the Promos of ‘Table No. 21’ is that it’s another one of those typical Hollywood style game shows with some crazy stuffs happenings in it. One might remember films like ‘Luck’ or T.V Show – ‘Sach Ka Samna’, etc. Well all your guesses are correct, but ‘Table No. 21’ has more than what is displays in the promos. What more?? Well let’s find out.

‘Table No. 21’ is story of a couple {Rajeev Khandelwal & Tena Desae} who win a free lucky draw trip to Fiji Islands. There they meet Mr.Khan {Paresh Rawal} who is the organizer of their trip and offers them an Internet game show where they can win 21 Crores. Despite of having huge prize money the game involves truth, dare & death. The couples are suppose to answer 8 questions with truth, followed by dare task. Thus starts the thrilling ride full of twists and turns.

Story has similarities with films like ‘Luck’, ‘Gumnam’, ‘Error 404’, ‘Chitkabrey’ and even T.V Series ‘Sach Ka Samna’, but it still has its own flavor and style. The film starts with some low moments, but as it progresses ahead it becomes quite gripping and keeps you glued to the silver screen. As the game begins it’s a total edge of the seat type entertainment which continues even post interval till the anti climax, where it drags for some times leading to a hard hitting finale which is very similar to Ravi Kishen’s ‘Chitkabrey’. Bearing few dare task rest all are very interesting, even the flashback related to the task adds as a positive point in the film adding curiosity for its viewers.
On the flip side the movie has some cleashay dialogs followed by many predictable scenes, the dramatic portions dilute the flow of film. Also the movie goes bit hay way at times and there are many unanswered questions or loose ends towards the finale, which one might like to know after the completion of the film.

Camera work is good and all the locations of Fiji Islands are wonderful. Editing is crisp and edgy. Music is very weak and songs like ‘Mann Mera’ & ‘O Sajna’ could have been avoided.

Director Aditya Dutt makes an interesting comeback with this film and despite of all the facts he keeps you involved in the film. He succeeds in giving the thriller impact which could have been much better. You will like his way of storytelling which leads to a dark climax with some realistic facts towards the end credits.

Paresh Rawal has always proved what a fine actor he is. Here too he carries the whole film on his shoulders. He keeps you intact along with screenplay in the film. After long time he is back with his villain type role and once again succeeds in big way. Rajeev Khandelwal is good, but not as best as he was in ‘Aamir’ or ‘Shaitan’. Tena Desae looks like Priyanka Chopra clone and is the weakest link in the film as she hardly knows how to act. Druv Ganesh is superb towards the finale part as Akram. Hanif as Paresh Rawal’s right hand was terrible.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ iss film mein kitna hai Dum ?

Dum hai, kaafi Dum hai for all those who love such Hollywood style desi thrillers. The movie keeps you glued to the silver screen with its game format, screenplay, and performances by the leading men’s along with the hard hitting finale. Yes it’s not a world class thriller or some highly intellectual stuff, but has one important thing which is entertainment quotient & a great concept. In short this table is full of popcorn type stuffs which are not tummy fillers but keeps going smoothly in your tummy and one can enjoy till it lasts.
