The best childrens’ films ive seen till date are Aamir Khan’s Taare Zameen Par, Shekhar Kapoor’s Masoom & Majid Majidi’s Children of Heaven… This is the 4th movie in that list…

The movie reminded me a lot of the Mani Ratnam style of filmmaking (read…Dil Se…), probably bcos Santosh Sivan has worked soo much with Mani Ratnam, it has definitely had an impact on his style of filmmaking as well…

When a cinematographer turns director, the outcome is a pure visual delight. While capturing Kashmir on a lens, a director is sure to get carried away and drift into the scenic beauty of the place, but not Sivan… He has kept it very simple and has concentrated more on the storyline and has kept Kashmir as the backdrop. And when he does actually show Kashmir, its more to show the plight of the people & the difficulties faced by them in everyday life.

The movie sensitises you to the issue of Kashmir…how a heaven has been turned into a hell but still there are people within that hell who keep humanity alive…It shows how at one end of the spectrum you have the terrorists and the army each believing fully in their actions and the disregard with which they treat people, and at the same time, at the other end of the spectrum there is a boy ‘Tahaan’ living with his family who still believes that all is not dead and there is still hope. The movie is the journey of the young 8 year old boy to get his donkey back at any cost. Somewhere in the middle of this spectrum are people like Anupam Kher who have seen death in the valley soo closely that they see everyone with suspicion even though they are pure at heart.

The film is not a course on morals and righteousness, but still conveys certain messages very subtly:
    - The last scene when Tahaan is about to throw the grenade but at the last moment decides not to, he gets to know that had he thrown the grenade, he would have probably killed his own father. Thus, showing that wars makes you kill your own loved ones even though you don’t intend to.
    - Young kids pretending to be terrorists showing how all this has now become a ‘way of life’ in the valley
    - Victor Bannerjee tells his grandkids a story where a ray of light made all the dreams of a young girl come true and after that Tahaan repeatedly tries to catch the rays of the morning sun within his palms hoping that it will make all his dreams come true as well
    - Rahul Bose when he says, “accha hua aapke maamu budhapee mein mare, kyunki aaj kal jawaan logo ke marne ke khabar zyada aati hai”
    - Rahul Bose again when he says “hamari jaan se zyada mehangee gadhe ke jaan hai, accha hota agar main gadha mann kar he paida hota”

    And the list is endless…

Back to the movie, the kid is sensational in his portrayal of the young kashmiri boy. You would have already read a lot bout his acting capabilities so wudnt delve into that again, but he definitely deserves a mention…

Rahul Bose is wasted as an actor but certainly has some of the best & hard-hitting lines. I haven’t seen a lot of Victor Bannerjee movies but wud like to see more of them after this one. Anupam Kher impresses a lot as well…

Go watch this movie for it keeps you on the edge of your seat till the very end…
