Taj Mahal – An Eternal Love Story is Mughal history come alive. The Taj Mahal has always been a source of immense fascination for centuries but little is known about it apart from the much-hyped romantic tale of a husband’s love for his wife.
Akbar Khan after years of research on Mughal history offers lesser known facts and details about the architect of this wonder and his family.
Shahjahan(Khurram) was due to be the successive emperor after his father Jahangir. Khurram had fallen in love with Arjumand Bano who was the daughter of Khurram’s step-mother’s brother. However, Khurram’s step-mother Noor Jahan strongly antagonized the relationship because she wanted Khurram to marry Ladli Begum, her daughter from a previous marriage.
When Khurram refused to give in to his step-mother’s wishes, the latter maligned Jahangir against his own son and succeeded in breaking the relationship between Khurram and Arjumand Bano, though temporarily. Khurram was forced to marry Kandahari Begum.
After Jahangir’s demise, Shahjahan became the king of the Mughal empire. He married Arjumand Bano, who later came to be known as Mumtaz Mahal. However, the marriage was short-lived and Mumtaz Mahal died at childbirth. In keeping with her wishes Shahjahan created the great marvel of all times.
The film unfolds in flashback. Shahjahan is reminiscing his past as he lies captive in a fort looking at the Taj Mahal and being a witness and victim to his sons’ atrocities.
