Target is the full fledged action film from Brand Value Communications (the film division of the Rose Valley Group) starring Joy, Sayantika and Mithun in a special role. Now it seems that that the group is trying to best to promote this pair because we just saw them a month in Hangover, a delightful comedy also starring Prasenjit and Sayantika was there in Ghar Sansar, also produced by Rose valley as well.Mithun in fact plays a very special role in this film and has in fact a small role though significant. The story –
Shubhankar is an extremely honest and much feared cop whom every goon despises and fears. He is promoted as S.P of Sundergarh and is transferred there. It seems that he was originally from that place and he had seen his own parents and his brother being murdered by Bacchu and he always wanted to return to that place to seek revenge. On reaching that place he discovers that all the cops are corrupt and they are hand in hand with Bacchu. He tries to set things right. He reunites with Preeti, his childhood love who turns out to be his subordinate Abani Ghosh’s daughter. He constantly tries to put an end to Bacchu’s notorious activities.Bacchu and Swamiji, another evil man try their best to get him out of the way. One night, Bacchu shoot Shubhankar and severely injure him, but he has a mysterious savior who saves him, takes him to hospital and even saves him by donating blood. When Bacchu and his man are celebrating the S.P’s death, the mysterious savior and Shubhankar go there and make their presence felt.Shubhankar meets his nephew and his sister-in-law and they are so happy to have him back.Bacchu eliminates Shubhankar’s sister-in-law when she opens her son’s tiffin box inside which they had kept a bomb.Shubhankar goes all out and kills Bacchu and his men as well as Swamiji. He is tried in court of murder charges and has no one to defend him when suddenly his mysterious savior turns up to defend him-Anthony Silva an orphan who had been brought up by his father and always kept an eye on Shubhankar. He wins the case and Shubhankar is set free.
Now though Mithun plays only a supporting role and appears just at the brink of interval, it is rest assured that he will draw the maximum catcalls or whistles when he appears and that ‘s exactly what it happens. One can see why he is the biggest draw. The film is full of gore, blood and violence and maybe a little in excess. However since it has been promoted as a complete action film, one has to digest it and the film honestly doesn’t disappoint. Though Joy is not too muscular and is on the leaner side, however he is fresh and looks good on the screen. He does his action scenes quite well, in fact this not a film where one gets a scope to act much. Same goes for Sayantika as well as the relationship between Shubhankar and Preeti is allowed to blossom as they hardly have any romantic scenes together as the hero is fighting the goons. However Joy does best what he is expected to do –look convincing .However one cant say if he does look convincing as a S.P as he looks too young and he always wears the clothes of civilians rather than of a cop. Also there are a few absurdities like for example –even after getting shot about thrice, Shubhankar mysteriously appears with Anthony Silva nearly in the next scene at Bacchu’s celebration party absolutely fresh as a daisy! Also the age gap between young Shubhankar and the older Shubhankar doesn’t match at all and his sister-in-law looks the same as does one of Bacchu’s gang even after years have passed. Had these been taken care of, it would have been a better film. However not once does the film tend to drag, in fact it is quite pacy and a good commercial thriller. A couple of songs have been shot abroad and the music is by Jeet Ganguli which is why it is decent though at times the background music overpowers the vocals and it is inaudible.Shyamal Dutta as Preeti’s father is good as is Deepankar Dey as Swamiji.Manjil Banerjee as Munna Hussein does a good job.
