That the occasion of wdding is not merely a ritual rite, but a festal fiesta and part and parcel of Bengali tradition has been emphasised in Tarun Majumdar's "Balika Badhu". The banters and funs exchanged between the bride's and groom's sides enliven the marriage-occasion, and Majumdar has wonderfully projected this truth. Besides, the teen-age romance (Partha Mukherjee and Mousumi Chatterjee), the character of Anup Kumar to generate humour and music by Hemanta Mukherjee make the film an asset.

Tarun Majumdar has never been concerned with modernity, madding crowd of a city and urban pomps. On the contrary, his chief enterprises is to highlight the domestic warmth, tie of kinship, old values and ethnic ethos which have fallen on the wane as a result of modern-hurry. In the early 70s, when the other important film-makers were busy with the contemporary political turmoils, Tarun Majumdar shifted his camera to some remote pastoral green and filmed "Nimantran"a document with rustic flavour.

Tarun Majumdar is the most efficient film-maker in blending art and commerce with perfect subtlities. Almost all of his films have been adopted from literatute and he has made brilliant screen-plays in such a way that the art of story-telling is never affected. "Balika Badhu" for example, a story by Bibhuti Bhushan Mukhopadhaya, is told in flash-back , in which the narrator turns over an album thus reminisces his salad days. Thus the humour has been capsuled within the coating of pathos.
