A simple, self-sufficient Maharashtrian family leads a frugal but comfortable life in a village, away from the bustling metropolis of Mumbai. Shree, the father of the family, travels to Mumbai frequently on work. On the such journey, he decides to surprise his family by taking them along. Om, the more impressionable of the two children, is enthralled at the prospect of visiting Mumbai. The imminent trip is all he can think of. He imagines that everything will be bigger, better and fantastical in Mumbai.
But on the trip, Om faces the harsh reality of them being poor, village folk. The family end up staying in a filthy, decrepit guest room. Om spots the plush imperials Hotel, every bit as magnificent as the Palace his grandmother described in her bedtime fables. Dazzled by the sight, he insists on visiting a staying at the hotel. Unable to placate the son, the father wagers a night;s stay at the hotel if the son can stand first in his school exams.
Om believes his father, and upon returning to their village, he burns the midnight oil. Shree is truly worried. He will have to come up with a suitable excuse to not upset his child. On hearing how much it cost to stay in a five star hotel. he is in a quandary over making that sort of money but all his cash-generating plans seem to backfire!
The father-son duo’s attempts to win the bet and the extent to which they are pushed by harsh realities, makes for the funny and emotional journey of this bitter-sweet tale.
