Teen Patti rating: 4 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 26 Feb 2010)

The last time we saw Mr.Amitabh bachchan gambling was in the movie, The Great Gambler. All those Gambling den of India and all over the world had added magic to the movie and had done proper justice to it. Decades later we see him back in the den but this time it’s different. How much different let’s find out.

“Teen Patti” is story of an aging Mathematics professor Venkat Subramanian {Amitabh Bachchan} who has been facing rejection over his theories related to Math’s. One day he accidentally plays an online game of Teen Patti and starts working on the probability of winning this game. He starts using his theories and comes up with some sort of formula. He takes help of his Colleague Professor Shantanu {R.Madhavan} and few students. Together they start working on this theory and later try to experiment it in a real situation. They go to an illegal gambling den where they goof up, due to some inexperience. Professor Venkat decides to stop this theory but later gets a call from a person who starts blackmailing him and demands money. Thus the whole team starts playing again and again and from small games to big games quenching individual thirst and lust. Who is the blackmailer? And what happens to everyone is the entire movie about.

Story is inspired by few Hollywood films, blended with some Desi touch. Screenplay is superb in first half, but as the second half starts it disappears and we are flooded with many unwanted scenes, especially of the students and their personal life’s. The movie drags towards a weak climax. Still the initial gambling scenes are interesting. Camera work is good.

Music is average, Neeyat is good but none of the songs goes well with the film.

Leena Yadav’s last work Shabd had a novel idea, but was very badly executed. Well in comparison she has evolved ahead then her last work, but again manages to do the same like she did in Shabd out here in the second half. Her command over the film looses out and we are left with some unwanted scenes and dragging screenplay. She prefers to give more footage to newcomers than the veterans, which misfires. She need to do her home work and hard work to make another film, as one liners don’t make a full fledged films.

I still have the image of daring gambler of The Great Gambler which was missing in this film, but still was interesting and different than the usual stuffs. Amitabh looked like the professor and fitted perfectly in his role. R.Madhavan was good, but nothing to boost about. Ben Kingsley in the small cameo was nice, but in comparison to the actors talent it was nowhere. All the newcomers were average. It was good to see cameo’s of actors. Boman Irani’s voice over for Ben Kingsley dint fit the bill.

So bol meri “Filmi Khopdi” is film mein kitna hain dum ?

Dum hain, thoda bahut initially dum hain, but later total gayab hain. It’s so sad that despite of having two aces like Amitabh Bachchan and Ben Kingsley the movie does not manage to impress you. Maybe Leena needed a third Ace, which is a good script.

    Ratings – 2/5
