  • Tedi Medi Love Story…

Teri Meri Kahaani rating: 5 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 22 Jun 2012)

‘Love Stories are all the same” - we must have heard this statement many times and if we think hard, at the end of the day yes it’s nearly true. So when it comes to Hindi Cinema where this genre is top-favorite since birth of Indian cinema till date, how different are these candy floss romantic films with each other or are they all the same. Well I guess the answer is they are different yet same. Its mostly the treatment, chemistry between the lead pair, the feel good factor, Songs and most important the director’s narration style. If any of these elements fails, the love story also fails. So this week, we have Kunal Kohli’s ‘Teri Meri Kahaani’ which has a pair whose chemistry seems to be a bit faded and also the music is not popular as it has to be. So let’s find out how different is this love story.

Story has basic inspiration from few foreign films {Taiwanese & Korean}, though looking at the promos one might also feel some inspiration from disaster films like ‘Mausam’ and ‘Dangerous Ishq’, but let me relieve you by saying that the promos are deceiving. The film is set in three different era 1910, 1960 and 2012. Yes, it’s the same boy-meets-girl and some problems happen but the conditions are different. Every story despite of same basic line has different treatment and screenplay which at times work in favor of the film. Some scenes are superb like Shahid-Prachi Desai track, Shahid – Vrijesh track, Shahid–Neha Sharma break up scene, Shahid – Priyanka 22 times denial, Shahid’s theory of Drinks and Girls, etc. But on the flip side the film tends to be repetitive at times and also too predictable or one can say everything happens very easily in this candy-floss love story. The 60’s and 2012 chapters are interesting, but the whole 1910 chapter {Except the Shayaris} was pretty stereotype. Also one might not feel the pain for its lead characters, which is the most important ingredient in love stories. Camera-work is good and many will love the 1960 track for this simple reason. The recreation of 1960’s Mumbai is superb, but at times looks amateurish and fake. Editing is fine, infect the movie runs with jet-speed at times.

Music by Sajid Wajid is good, but lacks a chart-topper song which is a must in such type of films. Still, one will love ‘Jab Se’ for Sonu’s singing and Shahid’s dance. ‘Muqtasar’ will remind you of ‘Tum Mile’ but goes well with the flow of the film. ‘That’s All’ is total gen-X type of song reminding you of Karan Johar or Yash Chopra type of candy floss films, ‘Allah Jaane’ is average. ‘Humse Pyar’ has one catchy tune. Background music is good and has a signature tune for all the eras.

Kunal Kohli is a cinema lover first and then a director. His last movie was a disaster, but before that we did witness few fine romantic films from him. You will love the way he has treated the 1960’s and 2012 love stories. The 60’s comic type treatment and 2012 – Techno-type treatment makes the film different and interesting. But the moment the 1910 track comes that special treatment vanishes and its then you realize that you are watching something which has been seen many times. Still he is a winner and as said earlier, the promos looked like we had another disaster on the lines of ‘Mausam’ or ‘Dangerous Ishq’, but the movie is far better than these films and the light heated romantic treatment works for this film. I would have loved if the maker would have added some more pain in the older tracks - that would have definitely worked wonders for the film.

Shahid Kapoor as Govind, Krissh and Javed is adorable. You will love him in all three characters. He gives his 100% and that’s what works majorly for this film. Priyanka Chopra looks smashing in 60’s track, but quite stale in the another tracks. The chemistry between Shahid and Priyanka does work in few chapters and fails at times too. Prachi Desai is cute. Vrajesh Hirjee is superb. Neha Sharma is great. Surendra Pal is wasted.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ iss film mein kitna hai Dum ?

Dum hai, especially in the first half. Sadly the second part is not at par with the first one. At end of the day again it’s the same romantic film, but thanks to superb treatment in the first half and the mixtures of all three track with decent music and lead pair chemistry working at most places; the film is a decent candyfloss type romantic film. If you like the lead pair, Soft Romantic films then this is your type of film with bit ‘teda-meda’ treatment, which makes it different & special than the typical ones.
