There’s a big reason to celebrate. We can finally boast of a world class film from recent years on the lives of underprivileged children that belongs to the league of Salaam Bombay & Cidade de Deus. A film that will be talked about for years to come and will surely go down as one of the greatest cinematic achievements our country has seen. And we have Irfan Kamal to thank for Thanks Maa, a heart-wrenching tale woven out of 12.66 million true stories.
There has been a lot of comparison between Slumdog Millionaire & Thanks Maa, and I would like to make my perspective clear on that front before proceeding any further. The two are completely different. While SM was an escapist drama, Thanks Maa is as real as the blood that runs through our veins. While SM was woven around slums, Thanks Maa is about slums, and more. In my opinion, comparing the two is very much like the proverbial apples and oranges.
Municipality, Sodabhai, Sursuri, Cutting & Dedh Shana are the 5 central characters in Thanks Maa. They roam the streets, railway stations and alleys of Bombay, picking pockets & doing other small odd jobs for a living. Through the lives of these 5, we’re taken through a virtual tour of the slums. No, not the Dharavi sightseeing tours that take the tourist through the slums for photo-ops. This one chokes you by clutching your Adam’s apple in a vice-grip.
