The Desire is a love story between Goutami (Shilpa Shetty), an accomplished Odissi dancer, and Jai Leang (Xia Yu), a talented painter and sculptor. They met during Goutami's visit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for a dance performance.
Goutamis life revolves entirely around dance. She channelizes all her desires into his art form which she considers pure and sacred. Untouched by the adulation, Goutami surpasses all other thoughts and concentrates on her first and last love: Dance.
Goutami is strong though calm, stubborn with a determination to look at her art from her unique viewpoint.
Goutami's grace and charm appeals to Jai and he begins to fall in love with her. She doesn't reciprocate his feelings and retuns to India shortly after her performance in Kuala Lumpur. Though she doesnt want to admit it, Jai does leave an impression on Goutamis mind.
A couple of years later, Gary Sukarno (Anupam Kher), a cultural impressario based in Kuala Lumpur, organizes an exhibition of Jais Pantings and sculptures in Mumbai. On his arrival, Jai begins his quest for Goutami and travels all over the country in hope of finding her.
He eventually finds her in a monstary with a 4 year old boy. They meet after her initial disinterest in seeing him. She even consents to him painting a portrait of herself. That night turns out to be very memorable and fateful for the two of them and transforms Goutamis life for ever
Colourful charecters like Musui, a boy in his early teens adopted by the Nrityagran inhabitants, Nalini, a Lesbian who longs and desires for Goutami in vain, Frederic Norman Souza, an ascomplished witty artist, add an interesting aspect to the story.
Essentially, The Desire is a passionate film mainly dealing with dance, music, art and emotions.
