LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST FOR SURE
There's a certain section of cine-goers who prefer different cinema over typical masala Bollywood movies. So if you feel you fall under this elite category, then Last one month must have been a film festival of sorts for you as since the last few weeks, we have been experiencing a very different type of Cinema and ‘The Last Lear’ is a pleasant addition to that list.
'The Last Lear' is the story of Harry [Amitabh Bachchan] an aging stage
Actor with immense love for Shakespeare and for whom Acing is more than
passion. Sid [Arjun Rampal], a modern day film-maker approaches Harry for a role in his movie. Harry is reluctant but later agrees. He forms a bonding with Shabnam
[Priety Zinta], Ione and Gautam [Jishu Sengupta] while shooting the film. When the movie shoot is about to end, Harry meets with an accident.
The Story is simple but has few big loopholes. There are few questions unanswered or rather taken for granted. Screenplay is inconsistent – just about good at some points and marvellous at some. Check out the scenes between Amitabh Bachchan and Arjun Rampal.. Priety and Shefali.. Priety and Mr.Bachchan..etc.
Cinematography is good and connects us with the film. The artwork [harry’s house etc] is brilliant. Background score is good especially the use of old songs in night and when harry performs Shakespeare.
Rituparno Ghosh’s direction and story telling is good, but might appear
A tad slow to many. In some places he has done a marvellous job, while in other places he has left many unanswered questions. However, He cannot do such mistakes with these kind of movies.
Big b is superb in this movie, though one wanted to see more of him. Watch the
expressions when he performs stage acts. Simply remarkable! Although not
the best but This is certainly one of the best ones. Priety is good and sweet. Arjun adds another feather hiscap in this small role. Jishu senGupta is good.
Shefali is excellent, Its only she who can do this role. Divya was good
So bol meri 'filmi khopdi'… is film mein kitna hain dum ?’
Dum hain performances mein kaafi dum hain. Haan selected logo ko pasand
aayegi aur kuch loopholes hain but As harry says … 'What makes an
actor?-The desire to perform'. That feel can be seen in Big B's performance. We just hope this is not definitely last but least of his fine acting.
Ratings – 3.5 (0.5 extra for Mr. Bachchan)
