I watched the movie with high expectations... Mira Nair, Jhumpa Lahiri, Tabu, Irrfan Khan ... oh, and I was disappointed.
Let me tell you first why I should have liked it - I grew up in Kolkata. So, the moment I see Howrah Bridge or the yellow Ambassador taxi I already half sold. Top that with the fact that I got married (somewhat like Ashima and Ashok) and came to the US and experience the dilemmas that the movie potrays about first generation immigrants. And yet, I think Nair just chose the wrong story to film. I would bet that there are layers of emotions and significant passages that were rushed through in the movie.
On the positive side - Tabu and Irfan (in a rather limted role) are quite good. So are Kal Penn and others. Also, there are moments that are poignant - like the airport scene where Irfan goes to Ohio. But what the heck, the whole thing is so rushed!
