My Rating

  • A poetic emotional film

Thendral rating: 6 out of 10(Arun Sundar wrote on 21 Dec 2011)

The film Thendral stars Uma,Parthiban and junior Bachan in important roles.Music is composed by Vidyasagar.

The interesting thing about director Thankar Bachan is that his movies are always centered on human emotions. And in his movies,be it Azhagi,Pallikoodam or even the upcoming Kalavadiya Pozhudugal, there is always a space for the heroine to showcase her talent.Thendral is also one such film of his.

The story revolves around a small village girl Thendral(Uma) who has a sort of liking towards Nallankilli,a famous Tamil writer. Then as the years pass, the liking turns into love.Unfortunately,Nallankilli(Parthepan)does not know that and absorbed in his own work.

A sudden twist in the tale comes where Nallankilli rapes Thendral as he thinks her to be a call girl!!Suddenly,Thendral gets pregnant but is happy to bear the child of Nallankilli.

The child grows up and meets Nallankilli in slightly tense circumstances. The mother is happy that the child is at the right place. She once comes to Nallankilli's house in Chennai from her village to see the child. But unfortunately, her desires are incomplete.

How the child reforms Nallankilli from his bad activities such as smoking, drinking etc are shown later. How Parthipan learns the truth about the child's mother and becomes a good human being is shown in a emotionally heart-breaking climax.

The film has enough twists and turns to keep the viewer engaged. Also it is a completely emotional film.

Of course, some people may ask or question about the logic of this film or about the character of Thendral. But that is where this film is based on.Also some feel may feel the film is too dramatic or too emotional.People may have their own viewpoints but they ignore the subtle message of this film.

Often in life,we do become selfish, preoccupied with success and care less about the people around us.Nallankilli is such a person initially who undergoes a remarkable transformation at the end of the film.

Parthepan and Uma deliver natural and impressive performances. The real show-stealer is actress Uma.She has lived the character of Thendral. After this film released, she earned the name "Thendral"Uma.
The small boy also delivers a decent performance.

All the songs composed by music director Vidhyasagar have a rustic feel and flavour.I particularly like Adi Thozhi and Yea Penne songs very much. The music director has done a decent job.

    Screenplay and direction:

The screenplay and direction is good. The film is a bit slow and slightly less realistic than his previous film Azhagi. This may be a big minus for this film. Also the overdose of emotions might not work with a few.

Overall, barring some certain flaws that have crept, the film has an important for the people through Nallankilli's character.
