One of the landmarks of pseudo-modern Bengali bioscope. The movie inspired by Sameresh Basu's novel about the journey of a couple Montu (Soumitra) & Swarashi (Tanuja) brilliantly depicts the emotions, egoisms, loneliness & love, which carries can affect any relation & ultimately society as a whole. Montu is an unemployed, lower middle class bachelor leading an aimless life with fellow comrades (Rali, Chinmoy) of the same locality( para). He is in dire straits & is in an urgent need of a job for his family. He like his neighbour Swarashi who dislikes the bohemian, alcoholic Montu & his friends strongly. Mantu's income comprises of occasionally borrowing small amounts of money from his friend ( Jarun Kumar) who works in a factory. While Mantu is indsiplined Swarashi is an M. A. who is a teacher in a reputed educational institute. Every morning Mantu runs after Swarschi & tries to woo her. Each time he is insulted. But he doesn’t give up. He tries everything. He gets a small job at the factory & tries to make friends with Swarshi's elder brother Biseshwar. Ultimately he succeeds in proving his mettle & Swarashi is able to shed of the distaste regarding Montu & they both fall in love .Against wishes of both their families they marry & move on to a new flat. Struggle starts. Swarashi wants mantu to pass B. A. M. A. & ultimately become a man of depth & elements. Mantu too studies hard after coming from his office but often his undisciplined temperament comes out & his heart revolts. Issues arise about Mantu's indiscipline & destructive attitude & a difference grows between the couple. They fight. Swarashi gets frustrated about the restless Mantu. After lots of hurdles Mantu passes the B. A. exam & then the Masters too. He changes from within & becomes what Swarashi always wanted him to become. He finally acquires a post of the professor in the globally admired Jadavpur University. There he meets Hena (Sumita) & her renowned father (Mr. Banerjee). Mantu understands that Hena is infatuated with him & fallen in an abyss of love. Hena ( Mantu's student) & her father Mr. Banerjee (Kamal Mitra) offers Mantu a far better job which would help him hone his academic skills. Viewing all this Swarashi thinks she has lost her love to another woman & money. But Sudhir's (Mantu's younger brother) suicide leaves Mantu psychologically devastated. He realizes that humanity is the crux of truth. He remembers his roots. He recalls that whatever he is today is that only because of the endeavour, labour & integrity of Swarashi. He rejects job offer. He confides to Swarashi that without her he is nothing. The couple reunites ending of all misunderstanding. Music by Sudhir Das Gupta & cinematography by Ramananda sen gupta deserves special mention.
