Tor Naam is a love story with a difference. Why? Firstly it features a fresh pair, Gaurav Bajaj and Swati who are non Bengalis and are debutantes. The story is about a young couple who study in a boarding college. Now this is very unusual because neither are there such colleges in West Bengal and most probably not in India as well. The directors have not been able to decide whether it is a school or a college because the students seem to be wearing an uniform at times just like school going children and at times seem to be in casuals ! The directors are completely confused. Yes, a couple of engineering colleges or a few private institutes in Kolkata have uniforms, but not both, so we are more confused than them.
The film is about Raju and Sapna and their mutual attraction for each other (Raju’s attraction for Sapna’s plait is mentionable) which later on turns in to love , but they have to face Sapna’s very conservative parents who separate them. Raju’s father also passes away tragically in the meantime and Raju only concentrates on his studies and turns in to a new leaf meanwhile. He does get back Sapna surprisingly in the end and the end is interesting indeed.
The best about this film is though the lead pair are non Bengalis and most probably their voices have been dubbed, their performances make up for any drawbacks. Swati who plays Sapna and is South Indian, looks South Indian and fresh as does Gaurav as Raju. The best thing about them is their innocence which the lead pair are able to maintain right till the end . Innocence is probably the biggest virtue of this couple and that makes this romantic love story realistic. The couple are short, but it doesn’t come in the way. Some people might think Gaurav to be a funny looking chap, but he makes it up for the final scenes in the end when he looks very different with his hairstyle and spectacles and looks quite handsome and good. The songs of this film are also better than most films and ‘College Campus E’ and ‘Tor Naam’, the lead song are worth mentioning. The character actors or actresses have performed well as expected, but it is the lead pair who do pass the test.
